Will there be 'Sherlock Holmes 3'? Robert Downey Jr. says his wife has the last word in this decision

Robert Downey Jr. might have an incredible fanbase for his character in a red-and-gold suit; however, his action-thriller detective role has a whole other, grittier, legendary tag attached to it. The 61-year-old actor and his wife, Susan Downey, managed to tease about the ‘Sherlock Holmes’ franchise: whether there would be another movie with Robert Downey Jr. starring as the renowned investigator?

Will there be ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’?

While the actor acknowledged that people are asking questions about another film after all these years, Downey said, “I don’t know,” when asked for an update. Furthermore, the ‘Oppenheimer’ actor mentioned that his wife is the producer of the adaptations and has the last word. With a grin on her face, Susan said to the Associated Press at the 2026 Lincoln Center Spring Gala, “It’s the greatest mystery,” prompting the actor to burst out into laughter.

About the ‘Sherlock Holmes’ franchise

For a decade, there have been reports of the third film being worked on, but all roads have led to the threequel being scrapped. Originally, the first film, with Downey as Holmes and Jude Law as his stalwart Dr. Watson, was released in 2009, followed by a sequel in 2011. Other notable actors who were part of the Holmes film family include Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, Kelly Reilly, Eddie Marsan, and many more. Directed by Guy Ritchie, Downey received the prestigious Golden Globe for his role as the legendary detective.
