Ashika Ranganath DEFENDS Janhvi Kapoor over 'Peddi' portrayal controversy: 'Don't blame the actress, blame the system'

The controversy around Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor‘s ‘Peddi’ has drawn voices from across the film industry. Ashika Ranganath, who has worked in Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu movies, has now come out in support of Janhvi Kapoor, urging audiences to direct their criticism at the filmmaking system rather than the actress. Let’s take a look at what she has to say.

Ashika Ranganath defends Janhvi Kapoor and calls out the system

Ashika Ranganath took to her Instagram Stories to address the backlash directed at Janhvi Kapoor’s portrayal of Achiyyamma in ‘Peddi’. In her post, she highlighted how female characters in commercial movies are routinely written to serve the male hero’s appeal rather than stand as fully realised individuals. The caption read, “Don’t blame the actress. Blame the system and the makers who still thinks this is what sells. Actors often work within the opportunities available to them, hoping to be a part of bigger films and reach wider audiences. If female characters feel underwritten, the responsibility lies more with the writing and filmmaking choices than with the women playing those roles.”

More about ‘Peddi’ controversy

‘Peddi’ is facing criticism over its portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor’s character, Achiyyamma, with many viewers pointing to the hypersexualisation of her role and the use of close-up shots of her body even as the male lead describes her facial beauty. Not just that, a romantic subplot in the film has sparked debate on social media. In one scene, Ram Charan’s character Peddi kisses Achiyyamma during a power cut without her consent, despite her prior lack of interest. Netizens described the act as assault and questioned why it was shown romantically, while a similar act by another character in the film is clearly presented as villainous behaviour.

Director Buchi Babu Sana issues an apology

On Saturday, director Buchi Babu Sana released a formal statement addressing the uproar. “As a filmmaker, I believe cinema should entertain, inspire, and connect with audiences. It should never make anyone feel uncomfortable or disrespected,” he wrote.Acknowledging the criticism, he stated, “We have heard the feedback regarding certain scenes in ‘Peddi’ and have taken it seriously,” and confirmed that changes would be made to the concerned portions. He added, “If any part of the film has been perceived that way, we respect those sentiments, understand the concerns being raised, and sincerely apologise.”

Box office collection

Despite the controversy, ‘Peddi’, which also stars Shiva Rajkumar, Divyenndu, and Boman Irani, has continued to perform strongly at the box office and has crossed Rs 190 crore worldwide.
