‘The Mummy 4’ just got a lot closer. The next entry in the beloved franchise has been moved up significantly, giving fans an earlier chance to reunite with the characters they fell in love with back in 1999. And in perhaps the biggest news of all, both Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are officially confirmed to return.According to Deadline, ‘The Mummy 4’ will now release on October 15, 2027, almost a full year earlier than its originally planned date of May 19, 2028. That original date will now presumably be used for a different release.
Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are officially returning
Fraser will repris e his role as Rick O’Connell, while Weisz returns as Evelyn Carnahan. The pair had previously been said to be in talks, but their return is now confirmed. No official word has been given on whether other cast members will also be back. The film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the directing duo also known as Radio Silence, and written by the pair alongside David Coggeshall.
The history of ‘The Mummy’ franchise
Originally released in 1999, ‘The Mummy’ quickly became a beloved adventure classic and launched a franchise that spanned nearly a decade. It was followed by ‘The Mummy Returns’ in 2001, with Fraser, Weisz, John Hannah, and Arnold Vosloo all returning for the sequel. The third instalment, ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’, arrived in 2008, with Fraser and Hannah returning but Weisz notably absent. Maria Bello stepped into the role of Evelyn in that film instead.
Another mummy film is also on the way
It is worth noting that ‘The Mummy 4’ will not be the only mummy-related film heading to cinemas in the coming years. Director Lee Cronin is also working on a separate mummy film, which arrives next spring. That film stars Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, Verónica Falcón, and May Calamawy. With two mummy films in the pipeline, audiences will have more than one opportunity to revisit the genre. But for fans of the original franchise, ‘The Mummy 4’ arriving on October 15, 2027, with Fraser and Weisz back where they belong, is the news they have been waiting for.
