NEW DELHI: India’s installed clean energy generation capacity has crossed the 300GW mark, taking the country past 60% of its target of having 500GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030.According to data released by renewable energy ministry, total non-fossil capacity stood at 300.5GW as on July 31, accounting for over 54% of total installed power generation capacity of around 552GW. Solar accounts for the largest share at 164.6GW, followed by large and small hydro at 57.2GW and wind at 58.1GW. Bio-power contributes nearly 11.8GW, while nuclear energy accounts for 8.8GW.The ministry said that a record 55.3GW of non-fossil capacity was added in 2025-26, including 44.6GW of solar and 6GW of wind capacity. Solar-led capacity addition rose from 2.8GW in 2014 to nearly 165GW now, while wind capacity has increased from 21GW to over 58GW during the same period.The rise in renewable capacity has also pushed up clean power generation, which increased from about 191 billion units in 2014-15 to 477.8 billion units in 2025-26.

The ministry said domestic manufacturing capacity for renewable energy equipment has also expanded, with the approved list of models and manufacturers for solar PV modules crossing 200GW, compared with 2.3GW in 2014, helped by the production-linked incentive scheme for high-efficiency solar modules.Govt is also implementing National Green Hydrogen Mission to build capacity for production and use of green hydrogen and its derivatives, with the aim of reducing emissions from hard-to-abate sectors and cutting dependence on imported fossil fuels.
